Richard Alston Dance 2014

  • Show Information

Richard Alston Dance Company
Tues 4 & Weds 5 March 7.30pm

Richard Alston is “a choreographer for whom every dance is a love affair with his chosen music” THE TIMES. This programme matches the shimmering beauty of Ravel with smouldering tango and the exhilaration of Benjamin Britten.

SHIMMER is danced to the sun-drenched music of Ravel played live. Julien Macdonald’s fabulous, jewel-encrusted cobweb costumes illuminate dazzling streaks of limpid choreography in a ravishingly beautiful piece of theatre.

“Alston’s barefoot dancers look as if they have been sprinkled with fairy dust. The effect is magical…It’s one of Alston’s most quietly moving dances.” THE TIMES

Martin Lawrance’s BRINK breathes with the vibrations of Japanese composer Ayuo’s Eurasian Tango played live by accordionist Ian Watson. Lawrance made Madcap for RADC, in 2012 which was rapturously received by audiences and critics alike.

“Set to Japanese tango music, (Brink) relocates the feisty, erotic rhetoric of tango to a new 21st century cultural mix” THE GUARDIAN

Revived for the centenary of Benjamin Britten, ILLUMINATIONS paints a vivid picture of the wild young genius Arthur Rimbaud. Britten and Alston combine to depict images from the turbulent life of the young poet, visionary and misfit in equal part.

“All the dancers ate up the work as if relishing this rare slice of passion and drama”

On the left hand side of the cat, a rat holds a stereotypical hobo sack on a stick. At the top of the artwork, gold text reads: 'Exeter Northcott Theatre and Le Navet Bete present Dick Whittington.' Another group of rats with large red eyes are playing around the letters in 'Dick Whittington'. A cat paw icon replaces the dot on top of the letter 'I' in 'Dick', and a block of cheese replaces the dot on top of the second letter 'I' in 'Whittington.
