Three young women (left and right, dressed as stage magicians; centre, dressed as a medieval peasant and bound with a rope) stand between two tinsel curtains against an orange background. Hags: A Magical Extravaganza (Babes in Arms Performance)

  • Show Information

In Bideford in 1682, the final witch trial in Britain took place. Three women were accused of witchcraft, tried and hanged.

Now fast forward to the present day and name one female magician…pretty tricky. But tonight, three fearless females are climbing out of their boxes, shaking off the sequins and investigating what really happened in a small town in North Devon 300 years ago.

Packed full of magic tricks, physical comedy & live music, our magiciennes explore the witch-hunt mania that swept the country and sent hundreds of innocent women to the gallows. With mind-blowing illusions, stupendous stunts and the occasional disappearing rabbit, Hags sets the record straight for thousands of falsely accused women with all the joy, silliness & spectacle these three can muster.

Hags enchants and charms as dark secrets, sleight of hand and historical horrors unfold.”

Babes in Arms performance

We understand that attending an evening performance when you have children can be a challenge. So, we have designed a relaxed matinee show just for parents, grandparents and carers to be able to attend, where children under 18 months are welcome too. Booking is open to new parents, family, carers, and anyone who would like to attend the show in the daytime and doesn’t mind some cute babies in the audience.

What to expect:

On arrival you will be supported to park your buggy and find an emergency cup of tea, piece of cake or something stronger from our theatre bar. You can come a bit early to meet other sleep-deprived parents, we’re all in it together.

This is a special daytime show with reduced amplification and dimmed lighting. You will be free to move about during the performance, come and go as you need. We sell seating at a reduced capacity so there’s plenty of space to spread out. There will also be some toys and mats for the children to play on inside the auditorium and in our breakout space (located just outside the auditorium doors). Here, you’ll also find an additional baby change area and can watch the show on a relay, so you won’t miss a thing, even if you have to step out of the auditorium. Please feel supported to breast, chest or bottle-feed whenever and wherever you need to.

This is a relaxed space. We expect babies to make noise – no apologies needed! Please be respectful and supportive of each other.

Have more questions? Head to our FAQs page for a comprehensive run-down of what to expect on the day, contact our friendly Box Office team on 01392 72 63 63, or email [email protected].

PAY IT FORWARD

During the booking process, you will asked whether you would like to contribute to Pay It Forward. Every donation helps us to give the opportunity for other parents or carers to enjoy the babes in arms performance of Hags. We are working with Exeter Community Initiatives to gift tickets to people who might not otherwise be able to attend.

This special event is in partnership with producer and mother Lizzy Humber who offers Daylight Sessions – daytime art, culture and gigs for parents. Find out more on Instagram – @LizzyHumber.

This is an adult centred show, with age guidance 11+. We have recommended that accompanying children are under 18 months. You will know your child best and the age of the accompanying children are at your discretion. You can find out more about the content of the show in our FAQs.

Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book artwork. Illustrated. A light green grassy field, in front of forests and mountains. A castle sits in front of the mountain peaks. O the grassy field, (left to right) a green dragon, and orange frog sitting on a stack of books, a bear, a pirate, a knight in medieval armour and a parrot circle around a young boy wearing a red and white striped shirt and blue jeans sitting in a yellow chair with a repeating leaf and parrot pattern. Above, text reads (top to bottom): ‘A musical adaptation of the best-selling book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book.’ Below this text, a crocodile tears apart a book. Other books lie on the right side of the crocodile in the grass.

Houdini’s Greatest Escape artwork: An illustration that shows the top of a crystal ball, within which we see Houdini (a white man wearing a grey suit) with his hands in cuffs, looking surprised. Surrounding him are disembodied hands holding a variety of objects: a fake gun shotting a flag that reads ‘bang!’, a key, a set of playing cards, a safe, an elephant and a goldfish in a bowl. A woman’s face peers over the crystal ball, only her eyes visible.
