We’re partnering with the National Theatre to boost opportunities for young people

This spring, we’re hosting the National Theatre’s Connections Festival and National Youth Theatre auditions for the first time.

Connections is an annual festival produced by the National Theatre. Youth theatres across the UK are invited to perform newly commissioned plays during a festival at a local theatre. Seven South West youth theatres will showcase their work on our iconic stage in April.

In February, local young people can audition to join the National Youth Theatre for free at our city-centre Barnfield Theatre. Successful auditionees will gain access to exclusive courses, workshops, and opportunities.

We’re delighted to have become a partner for the National Theatre’s hugely respected Connections programme, as well as hosting the National Youth Theatre Exeter auditions. We can’t wait to bring young people across the South West together to showcase their creativity and have fun. These partnerships are clear evidence of our commitment to young people and offering insight into theatre careers. We are making sure our local community can access some of the best theatre opportunities around, right here on their doorstep.

Romeo & Juliet artwork. A single rose stem is suspended in mid-air as if thrown, its red bud on fire and emitting sparks and light. The background is an orange-tinged street lined with tall buildings. The air is smoky and filled with glass and rubble. Text reads ‘Exeter Northcott presents Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare, directed by Martin Berry’.

This announcement is the latest in a series of expansions to our work with young people; in 2024, we extended the age range the Northcott Young Company, providing classes for children as young as five, and our next Northcott production, Romeo & Juliet, will feature an ensemble of 18 – 25 year-old dancers, who can sign up to audition now.

National Theatre Connections Festival will take place at the Northcott over three exciting days in April. Public booking for the performances is open now.
