Spotlight On: National Theatre Connections Festival

A line of young people performing on the Northcott stage, each with one hand on the shoulder of the person next to them.
This spring, we hosted National Theatre Connections Festival for the first time. Seven South-West youth theatres, including our own Northcott Young Creatives, came together to perform specially commissioned new plays on our iconic stage.

HEAR FROM A PARTICIPANT

“National Theatre Connections was such a brilliant and beautiful experience. It provided such an excellent opportunity to explore new work, and create alongside a brilliant cast and team.

Although we only had two weeks of rehearsals for our chosen piece, it gave us the perfect amount of time to explore, and develop the show in our own way. It gave us just the right amount of creative freedom to make it feel like our own, and create a really strong bond together as a cast.”

We truly felt looked after and it was such a pleasure being part of the Northcott Young Creatives, and to represent the theatre within the festival. I could not recommend the experience more to any young people interested, the adrenaline and excitement was  unforgettable!

“This year’s Connections Festival was a real celebration of young people’s creativity, energy, and commitment to telling bold stories. It was a joy to welcome so many brilliant young performers, directors, and facilitators into the building, and to see them take to the stage with such confidence and pride.

One of the things that stood out most for me was the atmosphere backstage and front of house. There was such a strong sense of support, generosity, and genuine excitement.”

The companies really cheered each other on, and it felt like a space where everyone was willing each other to succeed.

“We worked hard to make the festival feel welcoming and professional — from pizza and personalised lanyards to high-quality workshops and photography — it’s not just about the performance, it’s about the experience, and I think that’s where the heart of the festival lies.

We have been so excited to join in with National Theatre Connections – it’s a chance to open the doors wide, to put young voices centre stage, and to remind ourselves why theatre matters. I can’t wait to do it all again next year!”
