Theatre Caretaker Job Description

We are seeking a reliable and proactive Part-Time Caretaker to join our theatre team, based at the Barnfield Theatre. This role is essential in ensuring the smooth day-to-day operation of the building and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for staff, performers, and visitors.

Reporting to: Theatre Manager

Terms & Conditions

Salary: £13.30 per hour (£26,972.40 per annum FTE) [Grade 3]
Contract: Part-Time permanent contract
Hours: 15 hours a week (annualised) – usually 8:30 – 11:30, Monday to Friday
Holiday: 32 days (inc. statutory holidays) per annum pro rata

Key Responsibilities
Building Access & Security
  • Open and secure the building at designated times.
  • Ensure all areas are safe and ready for use.
  • Act as Person In Charge as required.
General Maintenance
  • Carry out routine maintenance tasks and minor repairs.
  • Report any issues requiring specialist attention promptly and liaise with contractors as appropriate.
  • Maintain records of maintenance activities, manage inventory, and develop maintenance schedules.
Deliveries & Stock Management
  • Receive and check deliveries.
  • Store items appropriately and maintain stock areas.
Event & Activity Setup
  • Prepare spaces for daily activities, rehearsals, and performances.
  • Move and set up furniture, equipment, and staging as required.
  • Ensure all areas are safe, clean and tidy for both public and private events.
  • Maintaining clear, presentable and up to date signage and posters in Front of House and Backstage areas.
Health & Safety Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with theatre safety standards.
  • Contribute to the monitoring and upholding of Health & Safety Compliance across the organisation.
  • Maintain clear emergency exits and assist with fire safety checks.
  • Provide fire marshal and first aid cover.
  • Conduct weekly fire alarm test.
General
  • The post holder may be asked to support the team across all the Northcott venues as required and appropriate.
  • Taking an active role in identifying and removing barriers for anyone with access needs.
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of the theatre’s programme.
  • Attending staff meetings/training as required.
  • Adhering to all other Exeter Northcott Theatre policies and procedures.
  • Any other duties which may be reasonably requested.
Person Specification
Skills & Attributes:
  • Practical skills for basic maintenance and repairs.
  • Strong organisational and time-management abilities.
  • Good communication skills and a helpful attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
Requirements:
  • Previous experience in a caretaker or facilities role (desirable).
  • Experience of electrical or plumbing work would be an advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety procedures.
  • Physical ability to handle manual tasks and lifting.
