Open Audition Call-Out

Exeter Northcott Theatre will be holding open auditions for voluntary local performers to form a community ensemble, as part of our world premiere production of Sarah Dickenson’s play The Commotion Time. Auditionees who have an interest in singing will also be offered the chance to sing at the same audition if they wish to also be considered for the show’s choir.

About the Production

This landmark production is the first production directed for Exeter Northcott by new Creative Director Martin Berry, representing a welcome return to professional home-produced drama.

It’s February 1547, soon after the death of Henry VIII. On the Cornwall/Devon border, the people of Poundstock are looking forward to completing their biggest ever community project, the Gildhouse, a state-of-the-art building for brewing, fundraising and feasting. But there are dangerous clouds on the horizon as the authorities in Exeter force through a set of reforms set to drive division into the heart of the community.

As bellies empty, society fractures and the Gildhouse’s key is taken away, the people take action in the only way left to them, marching to Exeter in their thousands to challenge the king and finally be heard.

Audition Information

We will be holding short workshop-style auditions with groups, ending with each auditionee being asked to read a short monologue. The monologues will be sent in advance, but performers are not expected to learn this in advance – copies will be available at auditions for script-in-hand reading.

Auditions will take place at the times/locations listed below:

Thursday 6 June @ Barnfield Theatre, Barnfield Road, Exeter EX1 1SN

6pm – 8pm
8pm – 10pm

Friday 7 June @ Barnfield Theatre, Barnfield Road, Exeter EX1 1SN

Sunday 9 June 2024 @ Exeter Northcott Theatre, Stocker Road, Exeter EX4 4QB

Auditioning performers must be aged 18 or over on 1 July 2024 to take part in this production, and local to Exeter – due to the nature of the production and the rehearsal schedule, we cannot consider anyone outside of the region. We aim to make all auditions and call-outs accessible – please do advise us when signing up if you have any access requirements and we will make all possible adjustments to facilitate your attendance.

All levels of experience are welcome to apply to audition for the community cast/ensemble.

Production Information & Dates

The production and performance period for The Commotion Time will run 15 – 23 October 2024 at Exeter Northcott Theatre; availability for these dates is essential.

Rehearsals will take place Thursday evenings and some Mondays between July and October, plus occasional Saturdays.

We would like cast members to be available for all rehearsals, though we understand that some clashes may be unavoidable, especially given the unpaid nature of the opportunity – if you expect to make the majority of dates but may have a small number of potential clashes, please do apply to audition and there will be a chance to let us know which dates you cannot do which we can review.

To register to audition, please sign up at the link below indicating all audition slots you may be able to attend:

We will confirm which slot you are registered for once your application has been processed. Please be aware that, once you have been offered a slot, it may not be possible to reschedule – so please ensure you are free on the dates/times you indicate when applying.
