The Bar Supervisor is a key member of the Front of House team, delivering outstanding customer service to audiences visiting the theatre. Working with the Food & Beverage Manager, they will take a hands-on role in managing and motivating the bar team during performances and events, ensuring smooth operations and excellent service.
This role is offered on a six-month, fixed term basis.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Operational
- Delivering and modelling excellent customer service at all times
- Overseeing bar and café operations during the daytime and for evening performances, ensuring smooth customer flow and efficient service.
- Leading the casual Front of House on the day team to deliver the highest standard of service for a performance including managing drink and food sales and taking the lead in taking and preparing pre-show service/interval orders.
- Being aware of Exeter Northcott activities and answering customer enquiries
- Contributing to good team morale, encouraging and motivating all Front of House staff to perform at their best. Supporting the Food & Beverage Manager to identify training and development needs, and areas for improvement.
- Ensuring that all health and safety best practices are followed at all times
- Delivering detailed and effective handovers between shifts, including stock levels, sales performance, and any operational issues or till anomalies, to maintain continuity and efficiency. Ensuring operational information is being filtered to relevant departments and management.
- Maintaining the daily orders list and working with the duty management team to ensure and effective ordering process.
- Supporting delivery of income targets as agreed with the F&B Manager by implementing strategies to increase sales, such as upselling, promotions, and customer engagement initiatives.
- Making sure all Front of House equipment is serviced maintained and clean, doing weekly or monthly checks and reporting any defects.
- Managing cash handling procedures, checking floats at bar opening and closing, and ensuring adherence to ENT’s cashing-up policies.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant licensing laws.
General
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the strategy and business plan of ENT
- Thinking creatively and strategically about how the Front of House activity contributes to ENT goals and being alert to relevant opportunities.
- Taking an active role in identifying and removing access barriers for anyone with access needs
- Maintaining a working knowledge of the theatre’s programme
- Attending staff meetings/training as required
- Adhering to all Exeter Northcott Theatre policies & procedures
- Always maintaining confidentiality.
- Any other duties which may be reasonably requested by the Theatre Manager.

Essential
- Experience of working in a customer facing hospitality role
- Barista experience
- Proven experience of leading by example
- Demonstrable success in leading and motivating a team.
- Excellent customer service skills
- A flexible approach to hours and work including evenings and weekends
- A confident approach with a ‘can do’ attitude
- Good articulacy, literacy, and numeracy skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene
- Flexible, adaptable, and positive – a strong team player
- Ability to work under pressure
Desirable
- An interest in the arts and/or experience of working in a theatre
- Level 3 Food Safety and Hygiene
- First Aid qualified
- Knowledge of licensing
Terms & Conditions
- Salary: £9,523 per annum (£12.21 per hour), with a salary review in August
- Contract type: 6-month, fixed term
- Working hours: 15 per week
- Working pattern: exact days/times will vary depending on the theatre’s programme. Regular evening and weekend work required.
- Holiday: 32 days per annum (inclusive of bank holidays) pro rata
