Deaf-led Events

The Exeter Northcott Theatre and Deaf Academy charities are partnering to celebrate inclusion, culture and creativity for all audiences, including those who are Deaf and have additional needs. The first such initiative of its kind in the South West, 2026 marks the Deaf Academy’s 200th anniversary, as the oldest school for Deaf children in England. The celebration will bring people across Devon and beyond to Exeter to take part in deaf-led comedy nights, theatre performances, talks, workshops and a deaf rave.

Both comedians will be performing in British Sign Language, with interpretation provided for hearing audiences.

Gavin Lilley

Gavin Lilley, the well-established deaf comedian will be bringing his hilarious stories to you! Drawing on his experiences as a sign language user, a traveller and a weary father of three – his cringing moments of embarrassment and experiences during his encounters throughout his eventful life will make you chortle.

He has performed all over the UK and Europe, bringing laughter to deaf and hearing alike. He has performed at hundreds of venues, namely the London Palladium, the Edinburgh Fringe and at the Helsinki Apollo. He also supported John Bishop on his tour last year.

Grab this opportunity for a unique perspective of our diverse cultures (and these habits we’d rather keep to ourselves), through the masterful hands of Gavin Lilley!

Deaf Rave

Founded in 2003 by Troi Lee MBE, Deaf Rave is an award-winning collective and cultural movement led by Deaf artists, DJs, and producers. Known worldwide for breaking barriers in music, nightlife, and the creative industries, Deaf Rave creates powerful shared spaces where Deaf audiences come together through music, expression, and culture.

There will be a free, drop-in taster workshop in the Clifford Room from 1-2pm, open to all Deaf Rave and Family Deaf Rave ticket-holders who’d like to explore the equipment and see how everything works before the rave begins at 2pm.

The day kicks off with a Deaf-led, Deaf-taught DJ workshop, giving participants the chance to learn directly from established artists and teachers. Using vibration backpacks, everyone can physically feel the music while exploring rhythm in an inclusive, accessible environment. Following the workshop will be a joyful, family-friendly party where the fun, music and vibrations continue for all ages.

About the Deaf Academy Bicentenary Events

We’re delighted to partner with the Exeter Northcott to stage wonderful cultural events and performances, showcasing the talents of Deaf people and also providing important opportunities to raise Deaf awareness and for Deaf people to access culture. As the oldest Deaf school in England, we are honoured to be marking 200 years of Deaf education, culture and community. This is a momentous milestone in our charity’s history, and is both an opportunity to celebrate and to create a legacy for the next exciting chapter.
