The Circus is in town. The Big Top has been set up and Fitzgibbons Travelling Circus are ready to perform their “Fantastical Feast of Fun” show. Unfortunately, at the last rehearsal before opening night disaster strikes when Paulo Orsini of the Flying Orsini’s falls to his death from the trapeze.

An investigation discovers that Paulo Orsini’s catch bar had been coated with Vaseline and on his first somersault his hands had slipped on the bar and he had fallen to the sawdust ring below and was killed instantly.

Who stood to gain by Paulo Orsini’s death? His brother Franco Orsini perhaps? Then, of course, there was Arabella Fitzgibbon, the Ringmaster, or the loveable Korky the Clown. Finally, could it have been the bare back rider Francois D’Orleac? As the evening progresses tensions rise and secrets are revealed. There is another death!

Tonight was supposed to have been a celebration, members of the Circus and their friends had looked into the bar before their opening night and were also hoping to drum up some trade. It was decided that the event should go ahead as it would give Appleby a chance to get to know his suspects and continue his investigation. All the clues will be there to catch the killer, but will they be correctly deduced? Chief Inspector Appleby, together with the help of the other diners – you -, is determined to get to the truth before the night is out.
