Elevate Festival: LAYLI (&Majnun)

Exeter Northcott Associate Company SHE present their newest piece currently in development, an adaptation of the classic SWANA romance Layli and Majnun.

A tale of forbidden love, two lovers forced apart by societal constraints, reunited in the autumn of their lives.

“And when a thousand curls have chained a lover,
There can be no escape, the struggle’s over;
The theft has happened, if a lover’s wiser
He knows it happened right before his eyes.”

We meet Layli trapped in a loveless marriage and yearning to be reunited with Majnun.

Dance artist and choreographer Maria Tarokh examines Layli’s loneliness, heartbreak, and yearning for freedom as this often-overlooked character is given a chance to tell her side of the story. LAYLI (&Majnun) is explored through contemporary dance, spoken word and classical Persian dance.

This performance features a solo excerpt of a work in progress, an adaptation of the poem Layli and Majnun, as written by Persian poet Nezami Ganjavi.


Elevate Festival

This event is part of Elevate Festival, a week-long celebration of new work from South-West artists.

Age guidance 14+. The performance deals with adult themes. Content warnings.
